Testing the TCP/IP Using IFCONFIG and PING
Ifconfig Utility
The IFCONFIG utility is utilized to verify the TCP/IP configuration parameters on the host computer. The configuration parameters involves the IP address, subnet mask and default gateway. An IFCONFIG utility is useful in determining whether the configuration is initialized. It is also useful in determining to configuration the duplicate IP address.
# ifconfig -a
PING Utility
The Packet Internet Gopher (PING) utility is used to test connectivity of the TCP/IP host, following the configuration is verified with the IFCONFIG utility. A PING utility is a diagnostic tool that is used to test TCP/IP configurations. It is also utilized to diagnose connection failures. The ICMP echo request and echo failure messages are used through PING to determine whether a exacting TCP/IP host is functional and available.
# ping <ip-address>
