Knowledge Based (Expert) Process Planning for Casting

Casting is an appropriate domain for the application of knowledge based (KB) systems as most foundry engineers take decisions based on expertise accumulated over years of experience. To capture their expertise and utilize this knowledge for decision making,

KB CAPP systems for casting are being developed [Darwish and Al-Tamimi, 1996]. A typical KB System for casting is discussed below.

Expert System for Casting Process Selection

Given figure shows the architecture of a typical Expert System. They provide domain specific problem solving abilities by simulating the logic and reasoning ability of human experts. The domain knowledge is acquired from human experts in terms of data (facts), reasoning rules and the associated explanations for building an expert system.
