Advantage and Disadvantage of Hierarchical Code

Advantage

It might represent a large amount of information with very few code positions. The hierarchical nature of the code makes it useful for retrieval and storage of design associated information such as material, geometry, and size as depicted in given Figure

Disadvantage

A drawback is associated to the complexity of the coding system.

In manufacturing the applicability of these codes is restricted, as this is difficult to cover information on manufacturing sequences in hierarchical manner.
