Classifying games:
As the above two stories show, games of strategy may arise in different context. Accordingly different games will have different features. In the theory of games we study these features with subtle details. This task of studying different games could be simplified by grouping these features into few categories'or dimensions. We develop this classification in this section by asking few questions in the following.
Whether the Moves in the Games Simultaneous or Sequential
Moves in chess are sequential, white moves first then black and then white again and so on till the game ends. By contrast, while bidding for a railway contract, contractors bid simultaneously without knowing competitors bids.
The distinction between sequential and simultaneous moves is important because these two types of games require different type of interactive thinking. In a sequential move game, one player must think: if I do this (adopt a strategy) how my opponent will react to it and what will be its consequence. Thus, player's current move is governed by calculation of its future consequences. But in simultaneous move games one player has the trickier task to figure out what her opponent is going to do right now. She also must recognise that her opponent is also constantly trying to do the same thing.
