Vertical Control by Level and Staff

A series of points having same elevation are located on the ground in this method. An instrument station on the ground is selected so in which it commands a view of most of the fields to be surveyed. Height of the instrument could be fixed sighting a nearest benchmark. Staff reading is computed for a particular contour elevation. The staff man is directed to move left or right along the expected contour until the needed reading is observed. A series of points having similar elevation as shown through the similar staff reading are plotted and joined to get a smooth curve.
