Some Important Membrane Processes:

The principal objective of a membrane separation process is separation of a desirable substance from a given mixture. Presently, almost all the membrane processes use synthetic membranes. While biological membranes contain out a number of complicated separations in all life processes, they are not hugely used. There are a number of membrane processes that could be defined through considering the following aspects:

• Separation objective-a nature of the substance that requires to be separated from the nature of the mixture,
• The nature of the species retained through the membrane,
• The nature of the species permeating by the membranes,
• The driving force required to achieve the desired separation, and
• The mechanism of separation.

There are various membrane separation processes that are of industrial importance as on present days. They are briefly discussed below along with respect to their principal features.
