Excitable cells

The small potential difference survives across the plasma membrane which surrounds all the cells. Whenever sufficiently stimulated excitable cells generate action potentials, then transient reversals in this membrane potential are actively propagated over the cell surface. Excitable cells involve skeletal, neurons, cardiac, and smooth muscle cells, and a few endocrine cells. The membrane potential of an un-stimulated excitable cell always called the resting potential.
