Observations on Linear Programming and Mathematical Techniques:
Linear programming is appropriate while the cost and variable relationships are linear or can be cut into approximately linear segments. Regarding application of sophisticated aggregate planning techniques in industry, only linear programming has seen wide usage. Much of this is being done by using the solver options in Microsoft excel. The basic issue is management's attitude toward model is general. Those companies where modelling is the way of life are likely to try the more sophisticated methods; in those where it is not, we would suspect that graphic and charting approaches would be utilized. Somewhere in the middle ground lie companies that have substantial experience in data processing and use the computer primarily for detailed scheduling. In these firms, we would expect to see experimentation with alternative cut-and-try plans in producing aggregate planning.
