Force and Power Requirements:
Design of the machine tools is depend on many considerations like power needs, the size to accommodate workpiece along different dimensions and rigidity of the machine tool elements to attain the desired accuracy,. In this unit, the methods to measure power needs for the machining of the given workpiece shall be discussed. The calculation of average power needs may be useful, however for design purpose maximum power needs should be utilized. Power requirements of a machine tool based on the machining conditions, the kind of the workpiece material being machined and the kind of tool employed. Furthermore, the power needs for rough machining are always different from the power needs for finish machining because of the difference in machining conditions.
In this unit, process for the power calculations is explained for the case of multi-point cutting and single-point cutting. In case of milling, the forces acting are of impact type that should be let at the time of designing the machine tools.
Objectives
After studying this unit, you must be able to
- calculate power needs for single-point cutting operations,
- measure average and maximum force and power needed in case of multi-point cutting operations as drilling and milling, and
- Compute machining time in case of milling, turning and drilling operations.
