Requirements for Maintenance System Optimisation

The following data for each machine are necessary for maintenance system optimization through V-E-I-N (or VED or CIN) analysis.

• Frequency of breakdown - daily/weekly/monthly.
• Time between Failures (TBF).
• Time to Repair (TTR) i.e. Repair/replacement time for each of the breakdown.
• Type of breakdown or failure.
• Size of maintenance crew.
• Production loss.
• Spares consumed and their costs

The above data will be changing as the machines are ageing. Hence while planning the percent of Breakdown Maintenance and Preventive Maintenance the age of the equipment also must be taken into consideration and planned properly for each type of equipment. Both breakdown and preventive maintenance incur cost to the organisation, but in different proportion. Thus the organisation has to design a proper mix of the two B.M. and P.M. for minimum loss or maximum gain.
