To choose a correct policy of maintenance it is essential to fix up the basis like the failures or the time or the reliability or the condition of the machine. Of these the oldest concept is that the failure based. On analysing the failures it is found that mostly the failures are fitted in normal or Poisson distribution in early days. Based on the frequency of occurrence these failures it is observed that most probable failures are expected to occur at regular intervals.

These calculations gave rise to a thought of preventing the failure since they are expected to occur regularly at specific intervals. Once these intervals are identified, a plan or schedule of the maintenance can be made. As the emphasis is on the time intervals these preventive maintenance techniques are grouped as Time Based Maintenance models.
