Failure Based Maintenance (FBM)

This is an unplanned maintenance because the failures considered occurring at most inconvenient times (According to Murphy, if failure can occur, it will and the failure occurs at the most inconvenient times). Thus the failure based maintenance techniques (such as breakdown maintenance, emergency maintenance, operate failure and corrective maintenance, etc.) are difficult to plan since the break downs and emergencies occur at unknown or unpredictable times (if they can be predicted, they cannot be called emergencies). Hence we might infer that this maintenance philosophy goes on the basis of failures. Thus one should understand different types of failure before using these strategies. The failures are classified in different ways.
