Classification of Lathe Tools
The single point lathe tools are classified as following :
(a) According to the direction of feed :
- Right hand tools - fed from right to left.
- Left hand tools - fed from left to right.
(b) According to the form of the point :
- Straight shank - when viewed from tool tip with straight axis.
- Bent shank tools: when viewed from top the tools, carry their axes as bent towards right or left near the face.
(c) According to the purpose :
Depending on purpose of applications the tools can be classified as turning, facing, threading, boring, parting off, grooving, forming, chamfering tool, etc.
(d) According to the method of manufacturing:
- Forged or Solid Tool: Tools are forged to the required shape in a single piece.
- Tipped Tool : These consists of HSS, cemented carbide or ceramic tip, brazed or mechanically held on a carbon steel shank or clamped mechanically onto specially made tool holders.
