The column usually contains particles of very small size, 3 -10 µ m. The material may be an adsorbent or materials which allow partition, ion exchange or molecular permeation. The pressure commonly used is around 6000 psi. A mobile phase might be composed of one solvent or a mixture of solvents with or without modifiers. Now high pressure thin layer chromatography (HPTLC) has also gained prominence.
