An equation is a statement of equality among two equal quantities. Many people are familiar with the concept of equality. The idea of equivalent physical quantities is encountered routinely. Merely an equation is the statement of this equality. There are three types of key ideas in an equation: an equation must include two expressions, the expressions have to be equal, and the equation must denote that the expressions are equal. Therefore, the statement that the sum of three and one equals four is an equation. It includes two expressions, (four and the sum of three and one), the expressions are equivalent, and the equation states in which they are equal.
The (=) equal sign is used to denotes equality in an equation. In its most common form, an algebraic equation consists of two algebraic expressions separated through an equal sign. The equal sign is the key sign in algebra. It is the sign which describes one expression in terms of another. In solving practical problems, it is the sign in which defines the unknown quantity in terms of known quantities.
