Vernier Height Gauge Method
When close tolerance is needed, i.e. up to 0.02 mm, a Vernier height gauge method should be utilized. The common steps of the method can be explained as:
(1) Clean the surface plate and the base of the height gauge carefully.
(2) Hold the gauge so that scriber point is almost 45° to the surface being laid out.
(3) Press down firmly on the surface or height gauge base.
(4) Pull the gauge to keep an accurate layout. Push will cause the scriber point to dig into the work which results in not correct layout lines.
(5) If the work is first fastened to the angle plate, each horizontal line can be laid out as outlined. Hence, the angle plate can be set on its edge (90° to the base) and the vertical lines can be laid out.
