Analysis by Analytical Methods:
In previous unit, you have learned about instantaneous centre method for finding velocity of any point in a mechanism. This method is fine for finding velocity and cannot be utilized determining acceleration. In addition, if lines drawn for finding instantaneous centre are parallel, they cannot situate instantaneous centre. Even if these lines are closely parallel, they shall meet at a great distance to situate instantaneous centre in the limited size of the paper. In this unit, you will be described relative velocity method and analytical method and how they may be utilized to find velocity and then acceleration of a point in a mechanism. Acceleration is necessary for finding inertia forces which are needed in dynamic analysis of a mechanism.
Objectives
After going through this unit you must be able to
- analyse plane motion,
- analyse plane motion along moving frames of references,
- resolve magnitude of Corioli's acceleration and its direction,
- resolve velocity and acceleration of any point in a mechanism, and
- Apply Klein's construction for finding acceleration of slider in slider crank mechanism.
