Columns:

The column is the most significant part of a gas chromatograph. It might be known as the heart of the instrument whereas the separation takes place. Most columns are commonly constructed of glass or metal tubing filled along with a carefully sized granular solid support. The grains of the support are classically coated along with an associative high boiling liquid phase. This liquid phase, frequent referred to as "stationary phase" is the active portion of the column. It is the interaction of sample solutes along with the liquid phase which determines how much separation could be achieved. A few columns do not use a liquid phase but rather employ porous polymers or solid adsorbents to achieve separation. Every type of column defines has its own grouping of applications.
