General Type of Building Construction

The floor system and the structural frame are so interlinked in which the selection of basic materials and types of construction are made for the building as a whole. For a given building, various alternatives are analyzed in view of building code needs, intended functions, performance and economy.

Based on the analysis, the subsequent combinations are commonly suggested:

(a)        If columns beams and girders are made of wood, after that a timber or wood floor system should be used.

(b)       If building is create of steel framed type, then the floor system could be of plain concrete type, RCC type or RCC ribbed floor type.

(c)        If building is create of R.C.C. framed type, then the floor system will be either of plain concrete or RCC slab or RCC ribbed floor.

(d)       If building consists of masonry bearing walls, then the several floor systems such as timber floors, concrete floors, steel joists or I beams, RCC beams and slabs, precast concrete, etc. could be used.
