INTRODUCTION
After worker has been selected for a job, has been trained to perform it and has worked on it for a while of time, his performance should be evaluated. Appraisal or Performance Evaluation is the procedure of deciding how worker do their jobs. Here, performance refers to the degree of completion of the tasks that make up an individual's job. It shows how well an individual is fulfilling the job requirements. Frequently the term is confused with efforts, which means that energy expended and utilized in a wrong sense. Performance is always deliberate in terms of results. A bank worker, for instance, may exert a great deal of effort when preparing for the CAIIB examination but manages to obtain a poor grade. In this case the attempt expended is high but performance is low.
DEFINITION
Performance appraisal is a technique of evaluating the behaviour of worker in the work spot, in general including both the quantitative and qualitative aspects of job performance. This is a systematic & objective way of evaluating both work-associated behaviour & potential of worker. It is a procedure that involves determining & communicating to a worker how he or she is doing the job and ideally, establishing a plan of development.
