Job Analysis

Job analysis is a formal and thorough examination of jobs. It is a systematic analysis of the tasks, duties and responsibilities essential to do a job. A task is particular work activity carried out for a particular purpose, for instance, typing a letter. A duty is a big work segment consisting of many tasks (which are associated by some sequence of events) that are performed by an individual, for instance, pick up, sort out and deliver incoming mail. Job responsibilities are compulsion to perform definite tasks and duties.

Job analysis is vital personnel activity because it recognizes what people do in their jobs and what they need in order to perform the job satisfactorily. The information regarding a job is usually collected through a structured questionnaire:
