Advantages and Disadvantages of GFAAS:

The most important advantages of this flameless vaporisation method are:

  • It eliminates the possibility of the interaction of the sample along with various components of the flame, thus eliminating anomalous results.
  • The longer residence time for the analyte within the path of incident radiation leads to a greater sensitivity.
  • As a higher proportion of the analyte sample is converted within vapours, the sensitivity is further enhanced.
  • It gives an ability to deal along with very small sample sizes. This becomes quite important in the context of clinical samples.

Thus, it has the following disadvantages too.

  • Effects of the background absorption are more serious.
  • Analyte might be lost during ashing especially for the volatile compounds.
  • The sample might not be fully atomised and it might produce 'memory effect' within the furnace.
  • Precision is poorer than within flame AAS. However, furnace auto samplers have enhanced the precision of furnace AAS.
  • Problems because of interferences and high background might become serious.
