Basic idea of generation
Former to the invention of Faraday’s Laws of electromagnetic conversation, electrical power was available from batteries with limited voltage and current levels. However complicated in construction, D.C generators were building up first to produce power in bulk. Though, due to restriction of the D.C machine to produce voltage beyond few hundred volts, it was not economical to broadcast large quantity of power over a long distance. For a given quantity of power, the current magnitude
(I = P/V)
therefore section of the copper conductor will be large. Thus generation, transmission and distribution of d.c power were limited to region of few kilometer radius with no interconnections among generating plants. Thus, area specific generating stations all along with its distribution networks had to be employed.
