Applications of Radioactivity:

The Radioactivity has several constructive applications in industry, science, and medicine. The most familiar is the nuclear fission reactor that was admired during the middle to late 1900s for producing electricity on a large scale. This kind of power plant has fallen into disrespect since of the hazardous waste products it generates.

Radioactive isotopes are used in medicine to help doctors in diagnosing sickness, positioning tumors within the body, measuring rates of metabolism, and inspecting the structure of internal organs. The controlled doses of radiation are at times used in an effort to destroy cancerous expansions. In industry, radiation can be used to measure the dimensions of thin sheets of metal or plastic, to demolish bacteria and viruses which may contaminate food and other matter consumed or handled by people, and to x-ray airline baggage. The other applications involve the irradiation of food, freight, and mail to defend the public against the hazard of biological attack.

Biologists and use Geologists radioactive dating to guess the ages of fossil samples and archeological artifacts. The element most usually used for this reason is carbon. Whenever a sample is formed or a specimen is alive, there is supposed to exist a certain proportion of 14C atoms amongst the total carbon atoms. These steadily decay into 12C atoms. By measuring the radiation intensity and establishing the proportion of 14C in archeological samples, anthropologists can obtain an idea of how long ago the world's great civilizations came into being, prospered, and declined. The Climatologists used the method to discover that the Earth has gone via cycles of widespread global warming and cooling.

The Carbon dating has exposed that the dinosaurs rapidly and almost entirely disappeared in a short time-span of around 65 million years ago. By a procedure of elimination, it was established that a large meteorite or comet splashed down in the Gulf of Mexico at that time. The Earth's weather cooled off for years since of debris injected into the environment following the impact that blocked much of the solar IR which generally reaches the surface. Additional research has shown that there have been numerous major bolide impacts in the far-away past, each of which has radically changed the evolutionary course of life on Earth. Based on this information, most of the scientists agree that it is only a matter of time before the other similar event occurs. Whenever-not if-it does, the consequences for humanity will be of biblical size.
