System Layouts

Some instance possibilities of FMS layouts are illustrated earlier. The broad categories of layouts that have been utilized are (Groover):

Types of Layouts:

• In-line Layout
• Loop Layout
• Ladder Layout
• Open Field Layout

In-line Layout

All of the machine tools are kept along a straight line as illustrated in Figure 1. It is the simplest form and it is generally utilized for smaller number of machines in a system. The parts move in well defined sequences and the workflow is in both the directions generally. The part handling at the individual workstations is carry out by the transport vehicle that will have the necessary pallet changer. Frequently the machine tools utilized in such a system are identical, so that the part routing shall not be a problem.
