It already discussed in the preceding section that fluctuation of energy results in fluctuation of the crank shaft speed that then results in fluctuation of the kinetic energy of the rotating parts. However the maximum permitted fluctuation in speed of the crank shaft is resolute by the cause for which the engine is to be utilized. Thus, to keep the maximum fluctuation of speed in a particular limit for a given maximum fluctuation of energy, a flywheel is mounted on the crank shaft.
