Design of Flywheel:
The flywheel contains a heavy rim which is associated to the hub by various arms. The mass moment of inertia is mostly contributed by the rim. From experience, this is known that 85 to 90% of the overall mass can be supposed to be estimated in the rim. 15 to 10 % of the mass is in the hub and arms.
The mean rim radius, Rm, based on allowable tensile strength, σa, mass density, p, and maximum angular velocity, ωmax, and it is specified by following
The cross-section of the rim is rectangular with more width than the thickness. The width might be around 2.5 times of thickness. The material utilized is generally cast iron.
