Use of Flow Indication:

The flow of liquids and gases carries energy by the piping system. In several conditions, it is extremely important to know whether there is flow and the rate at that the flow is occurring. An instance of flow which is important to a facility operator is equipment cooling flow. A flow of coolant is essential in removing the heat produced through the system, thus avoiding damage to the equipment. Classically, flow indication is used in protection systems and control systems which help manage system temperature.

One other method of determining system coolant flow is through using pump differential pressure. Flow could be approximated using pump differential pressure if all means of flow indication are lost. Pump differential pressure is proportional to the square of pump flow.
