Penetration Tests
These tests include the measurement of the resistance to penetration of a cone, a sampling spoon, or other shaped tools under static or dynamic loading. The generally used tests are the standard penetration test and the static and dynamic cone penetration tests. From these tests, the soil strata at several depths along within their properties could be acquired. From these penetration values, bearing capacity could be assessed.
Soil exploration should be able to give essential data to evaluate the following parameters:
(1) Safe bearing capacity of the soil,
(2) Subsoil water level, and
(3) Probable settlement of the structure under the design load.
The test report commonly provides recommendations regarding the depth of foundation and safe bearing capacity.
