Currently, all of the major CAD vendors are rapid to offer the capability to import and export STEP data files as the underlying STEP APs obtain the ISO standard acceptance level.5 In addition, many big manufacturers who have their own CAD modelling systems to conduct special product studies & design efforts use STEP. The Army, for example, has its Ballistics Research Laboratory (BRL) CAD system, that is utilized for conducting ballistics studies. At present, no one CAD/CAM vendor contain the wherewithal to support all of the CAD analytical needs of an organization as complex as DoD. There is a requirement to integrate the "best" analytic point solutions together to build up the "best" affordable weapon systems. STEP can help DoD fulfil this need.
