Process 1 of Part Family Formation

Since the objective is to group parts with minimum distance, parts 2 and 3, which have smallest distance (d₂₃ = 2) are grouped together to form part family (2, 3) and the distance between the part family (2, 3) and remaining parts is updated as below :

d_{(23) 1} = Min {d₂₁,  d₃₁} = Min {10, 8} = 8

d_{(23) 4}  = Min {d₂₄,  d₃₄ } = Min {11, 9} = 9

d_{(2, 3) 5}  = Min {d₂₅,  d₃₅} = Min {4, 4} = 4

d_{(2, 3) 6}  = Min {d₂₆,  d₃₆ } = Min {12, 12} = 12

The revised distance matrix is shown in given Figure.
