Impulse, Momentum, Work and Energy:
This unit will help you to understand the concept of Impulse, Momentum, Work done on a body, and Mechanical Energy available for bodies in motion. The two significant principles, say, Conservation of Momentum and Conservation of Energy are highlighted with great number of examples. The study of impact of two of bodies under elastic or plastic condition helps to understand the motion of the bodies after impact.
The above referred equations associated with impulse, momentum and energy give solutions to problems in a much easier and simpler way than the solution obtained by using principles of dynamic equilibrium as given by D′Alembert.
Objectives
Problems in Engineering Mechanics can be solved independently using different principles. By knowing various related principles, this is left to the analyzer to adopt any one powerful tool which provides the quickest solution.
After studying this unit, you should be able to :
- compute the motion under impulsive-forces,
- state the range of applications of principles of conservation of momentum and conservation of energy, and
- Study the motion of bodies after their impact.
