Friedel-Crafts alkylation and acylation:
Friedel-Crafts alkylation and acylation shown in the figure are two other instances of electrophilic substitution requiring the existence of a Lewis acid, and are specifically significant because they permit the construction of larger organic molecules through adding alkyl (R) or acyl (RCO) side chains to an aromatic ring.
