Anaerobic respiration

Anaerobic respiration occurs in prokaryotes which are unable to use oxygen as a terminal electron acceptor. These organisms are termed obligate anaerobes. Other prokaryotes can use anaerobic respiration facultatively if oxygen happens to be unavailable.  Less energy is generated during anaerobic respiration than in aerobic respiration. Nitrate, sulfate and carbon dioxide can be used as alternative electron acceptors.
