Exhaust System:
The exhaust system of a diesel engine presents three functions. First one, the exhaust system routes the spent combustion gasses away from the engine, whereas they are diluted through the atmosphere. That keeps the area around the engine habitable. Second one, the exhaust system confines and routes the gasses to the turbocharger, if used. Third one, the exhaust system permits mufflers to be used to decrease the engine noise.
