Process FMEA

As explained earlier, the process FMEA is utilized primarily to recognize areas of criticality to control & to emphasize the design of inherently more reliable process. Generally, the application of SPC in FMEA begins with the preparation of a procedure FMEA. The FMEA helps in understanding of the procedure and in the projecting of the critical areas to control.

• This is an analytical technique,
• This identifies potential product related process failure modes,
• Customer normally is end user but might be next process too,
• It assesses the potential effects of the failures on the customer,
• It identify the process causes and process variables on which to focus controls for :

1. Occurrence reduction,
2. Detection of failure conditions,

• It develops ranked list of potential failure modes leading to prioritization of corrective actions,
• It documents the results,
• It catalyses to stimulate interchange of ideas among functions affected and promote team approach,
• This is a living document and should be initiated.

1. Before or at the feasibility state,
2. Prior to tooling for production,
3. Take into account all of manufacturing operations, and
4. Before introducing a new or a modified process.
5. Throughout manufacturing planning stage of a new model or component
