Assuming allowable bearing stress in concrete σp = 4 MPa

The area of the bearing plate = 32, 588/4 = 8150 mm2

Width of column = 250 mm (Adopt bearing plate of 200 mm)

∴ Width of bearing plate = 8,150/200 = 42 mm

Adopting 2 No. 50 × 50 × 6 mm shoe angles

The width of the base plate = 50 + 50 + 6 = 106 mm > 42 mm ∴ OK.

Bearing pressure on concrete

p =      32, 588/(200 × 106)= 1.54 N / mm2

Moment at the section x-x,

M =     1.54 × 200 × 502/2 = 3, 85, 000 N mm

Let allowable bearing stress in steel σbs = 185 MPa.

Then section modulus

z = 3, 85, 000/185 = 2081 mm3

If t is the thickness of the plate

z = bt2 /6=200× t 2/6= 2081

6          6

giving t = 7.90 ≈ 8 mm

Therefore, 8 mm thick base plate may be adopted.
