Silver-Indium -Cadmium Alloys:
Through alloying cadmium, that has a thermal-absorption cross section of 2450 barns, along with silver and indium, that have high resonance absorption, a highly-effectual neutron absorber is produced.
The control efficiency of like alloys in water-moderated reactors could approach which of hafnium and is the control material generally used in pressurized-water reactors. An alloys (generally 80 percent silver, 15 percent indium, 5 percent cadmium) could be readily fabricated and have adequate strength at water-reactor temperatures. A control material is enclosed in a stainless steel tube to protect it from corrosion through the high-temperature water.
