Conduct Process Capability Study

The objective of the PC study is to resolve the inherent nature of the process as compared to the desired specifications. The output of the process should be examined under normal conditions, or what is typically called as hands-off conditions. The inputs (e.g., materials, setups, pressure ,cycle time's temperature, and operator) are fixed or standardized. The process is allowed to run without tinkering or adjusting while the output (that means the product or units or components) is carefully documented with respect to

  • Time,
  • Source, and
  • Order of production

An adequate number of data have to be taken to ensure confidence in the statistical analysis of the data. The precision of the measurement system must exceed the process capability through at least one order of magnitude.

The given steps are to be followed for PC study:

 (a) Design the PC experiment

  •  Use "normal" or "hands-off" process conditions; specify machine settings for, feed, speed, volume, material, pressure, operator, temperature etc. It is the standard PC study approach. Otherwise,
  • Use specified combinations of all of the input parameters, at several levels, that are believed to affect the quality characteristics being measured. These combinations must be run with the objective of choosing the best. For instance, speed levels might be high, normal, and low, or operators might be fast or slow.

 (b) Define the inspection method and the inspection means that means the procedure and the instrumentation.

 (c) Decide how many items shall be needed to perform the statistical analysis.

 (d) For the standard PC study, use homogeneous input material, and try to contrast it with normal (more variable) input material. (For a Taguchi approach, material is an input variable specified at different levels: homogeneous, normal and highly variable. If a material is not controllable, this is considered a noise factor.)

 (e) Data sheets should be designed to record date, time, source, order of production, and all the process parameters being utilized (or measured) while the data are being gathered. Supposing that the standard PC study approach is being utilized, the process is run, and the parts are made and measured.
