SOLUTION:      Diode shall be on for the negative half cycle .therefore the effective circuit is shown in the diagram.

                        By apply I_d = 0, V_d =0 to obtain transition voltage so that

                                                V_i - I_dR - 4V =0

                                                V_i - 0R - 4V =0

                                                V_i = 4V is transition voltage.

                        Therefore for the positive half cycle

                                                            V_L = V₀

                                                            V_L = 16 V.
