F-S-N-D (or F-S-N) Analysis
This analysis is done with a view to control obsolescence of consumable spare parts and takes into account the consumption pattern of the items.
- F-means 'Fast moving' items
- S-refers to 'Slow-moving' items
- N-stands for 'Non-moving' items
- D-stands for 'Dead' items
In this exercise quantity and consumption rates of all items are analysed and accordingly classified. Such classifications help in arranging (storing) the items in the stores. For example, the fast-moving (i.e. fast consumable) items should be kept near the exit of the stores so that these are easily available (located) and can be handled out without disturbing other items. Likewise slow-moving and non-moving items would take back seats in the stores. The non-moving (i.e. rare-moving) items should take positions at the top racks of the stores.
To carry out this analysis, the date of receipt and date of issue of all items are noted down and their movement rates (i.e. consumption rate) are ascertained.
