Brick Lintels
For openings lesser than 1 m and for lighter loads, lintels will be made from bricks are used. These are not extremely strong from structural point of view. A brick lintel consists of bricks placed on end or edge, as display in Figure 3. The depth of brick lintel varies from 10 to 20 cm, depending upon the span. It is constructed over temporary wooden centering. The bricks along with frogs are more appropriate for the construction of lintel, because the frogs, while filled with mortar, form joggles that increase the shear resistance of end joints. Such lintel is called as joggled brick lintel.
