Supervision of Stone Masonry Construction

Points must be kept in mind in supervising stone masonry work are following:

1. Durable stones and Hard, free from defects such as cavities veins, flaws etc. should be used.
2. Dressing of the stones must be as per the requirement.
3. Stones must be properly wetted before they are used so as to avoid sucking of water from mortar.
4. Stones must be laid on their natural bed.
5. Backing and Facing faces must be laid neatly and levelled and checked with wooden template.
6. Heart of masonry must be filled with mortars and stone chips. To thick mortar joints should be ignored.
7. Verticality of the wall must be frequently checked with plumb-bob.
8. Mortars should be used with correct proportion of sand and cement.
9. Continuous vertical joints should be ignored.
10. Within 1.5 m distances through stones should be used.
11. Height of masonry should be uniformly raised.
12. Under the, trusses, beams sills etc large flat stones should be used.
13. On previous day the masonry built should be well cleaned and freed from loose particles before continuing work.
14. Curing should be done correctly for 2 to 3 weeks.
