Properties of Cement Mortar: the essential properties of cement mortar are following:

1. Hydration of cement starts when water is added to the dry mixture of cement and sand, and it binds sand specific and also the surrounding surfaces of masonry and concrete.

2. A mix richer than 1:3 is prone to shrinkage.

3. Proportioned mortar which is well suited provides impervious surface.

4. Leaner mix is not capable of closing the voids in sand and therefore the plastered surface is porous.
