OBJEC T AND USES OF SURVEYING

As stated in the definition, object of surveying is to show relative positions of different objects of an area on paper and make plan or map of that area. Various uses of surveying are following:

1.      Plans prepared to record property lines of public, private and government lands help in avoiding needless controversies.

2.      For marking boundaries of countries, states, districts etc prepared map to avoid disputes.  Locality plans help in the area to identifying location of houses and offices.

3.      Road maps help tourist and travellers.

4.      Topographic maps showing natural features such as, streams, rivers hills, and forests help in planning irrigation projects and flood control measures.

5.      For planning and estimating project works such as, bridges, roads, airports, railways, water supply and waste water disposal surveying is needed.

6.      Marine and hydro graphic survey helps in planning navigation routes and harbours.

7.      For exploring mineral wealth Mine surveys are required.

8.      For determining different strata Geological surveys are necessary in the earth crust so that proper location is found for reservoirs.

9.      For unearthing relics of antiquity Archaeological surveys are useful.

10.  Astronomical survey helps in the study of movements of planets and for calculating standard and local times.

11.  For strategic planning Military survey is required.
