EARLY WARNING SYSTEM

Space technology plays a significant role in efficient mitigation of disaster. Indian Meteorological Department for a cyclone has developed a 4 stage warning system. The system works on the observation of development of low pressures in ocean 48 hours prior to the time of expected cyclone to hit land the alert warning is given. Twenty four hours prior to the anticipated time of arrival of cyclone, warning is given. Then 12 hours earlier cyclone arrival warning is given. Warnings regarding storms, their intensity and the likely path on regularly given through radio and television till the storm passes over.
