DISTEMPERS
Distempers are the cheaper variety, in which chalk is used of paints as base and water is used as a carrier. The commonly used emulsifying agent is glue or casein. Distempers are available in the form of paste and in powder form. Before use they are to be mixed with hot water.
The surface to be distempered might be thoroughly rubbed and cleaned. The cracks, if any might be filled by lime putty. For about two months the surface should be kept dry before applying distemper. So a primary coat is applied and is permitted to dry. Usually Distemper is applied in two coats.
Properties of Distemper
- Generally they are light in colour.
- Generally the coatings are thick.
- They give reflective coating.
- They are less durable than oil paints but cheaper.
