Cast Iron:

Significant properties of cast iron are following:

1.  Cast iron is brittle and does not absorb shocks
2.  Tensile strength is 150 N/mm2 and Compression strength is 700 N/mm2
3.  Cast iron's structure is crystalline, coarse and fibrous.
4.  Cast iron's specific gravity is 7.5.
5.  Cast iron does not rust-easi
6.  Cast iron cannot be magnetised.
7.  Cast iron has low melting point of about 1200°C.

Uses of Cast Iron:

1.  Cast iron is used for making sanitary pipes for rain water, sanitary fittings and manhole covers.
2.  Cast iron is used for making spiral stair cases and railings.
3.  Fire gratings; cover for pumps and motors and brackets are prepared with cast irons.
