High Carbon Steel
The carbon contains in steel is 0.7% to 1.5%.
Properties of Carbon Steel:
- It is tougher and elastic compared to mild steel.
- Welding is hard.
- It can be permanently magnetized.
- It is stronger in compression than in tension.
- It can withstand against shocks and vibrations better.
Uses of High Carbon Steel:
(i) High Carbon Steel is used for making tools such as files, drills chisels.
(ii) With high carbon steel many machine parts are made as it is capable of withstanding shocks and vibrations.
(iii) High Tensile Steel: Its composition contains 0.8% carbon and 0.6% manganese. The strength of this steel is quite high. Wires of High tensile steel are used in prestressed concrete works.
