Takai olefination in organic chemistry explains the organic reaction of an aldehyde with a diorganochromium compound to give an alkene. The aldehyde used is benzaldehyde and the organochromium species is produced from iodoform or bromoform and an surplus of chromium(II) chloride. The reaction resultant product is a vinyl halide. The major selling point is the E-configuration of the double bond. As per the principal investigator Kazuhiko Takai, existing alternatives like the Wittig reaction only give mixtures.
